Based on the Dutch Dialogues framework, the walls around the infamous London Ave. Canal will be removed. Dillard University will have the opportunity to expand over the canal and take advantage of the wetland area for recreation. This proposal includes housing mixed with fitness facilities and a nature center with an observation tower.

    SITE
Mid-City New Orelans, juxtaposed with the CBD, is a currently
blighted area that will become a growth district as the city becomes
more urban in coming years. The full city block spans from the historic
commercial fabric to the lower, segmented residential area.

    OBSERVATIONS
The Oretha Castle Haley (OCH) boulevard was the site of many historic
civil rights events and organizations. During segregation, the area featured many African -American shops. Now, the groups in the community are concerned with poverty and spreading the arts.

    CONCEPT
The base of the building follows the of the surroundings as the site
changes from urban to residential. The Oretha Castle Haley elevation reaches up two levels (Restaurant), then tapers down to the community (Bake Shop). Above, the Lecture fits on to the slope of this form, provides visual support for the program above. Two upper volumes contain the primary program of the school. These also step down with the fabric below. systems and egress have been organized to simplicity. The core contains the interior egress and elevator in addition to the mechanical chaise. The exterior egress hangs from top structure, and provides sunshading against the summer light while allowing winter light to enter the spaces. lower side of the fabric (Bake Shop + Receiving) opens onto a community garden with southern exposure the necessary space to grow some of what be cooked inside.

    DETAILS
Structural tectonics help to reinforce the conceptual massing,
while also hosting the curtain wall and egress.
The teaching kitchen block crowns the building with trusses intended
to allow for clear spans. Steel angles resting within the
trusses secure the curtian wall while offering shelfing space.
The lower steel construction combined with the
stair/elevator/mechanical core provide lateral bracing for the
higher steel. The most intense forces are sent to the ground with
diagonal supports. Egress hangs from the tops of the trusses by
    steel tension rods.

  • Cobra Stop
Bus stop for New Orleans, Louisiana. Used Revit Bim for parametric design. The widths along the spline can change, along with the control points of the spline itself. The structural steel pipe design includes the roof water management system. The wooden panels contain LEDs for light.

  • Ye New Library
Library in the French Quarter in NOLA. The concept relies on stepping courtyards that carve through the project and complete a full public path between different streets.

  • Carve to Reveal
Warehouse for Old City Building Center, a New Orleans vintage deconstruction non-profit that educates and employs at-risk youth.

The concept invoves cutting into a regular mass (metal) to reveal a special surface material (reflective colored glass). The typical warehouse structural section is re-tooled to create flood-protected class and admin space on the second floor with views to the work floor.

  • Bridge-Space
A student competition at Tulane to design a student gathering and presentation space. The bridge form fits between the student center and the business school. Openings allow for passerby below to peek on the presentations, and deck below the seating provides view down the path. The screen from the student center wraps around the structure to form the screen.

  • Can-itation
Proposal for Emory Global Health Competition 2013. Can-itation proposed two products, sodis-can and sani-can, for Chinese foreign aid in Africa and India. The Sani-Can design entirely reduces exposure to waste while simplifying humanure composting. The product design attempts to reduce the stigma of waste disposal by appearing clean and casual.

  • GRIDSHELL
This three day design build project focused on using grasshopper for rhino and other plug-ins to create a 3d surface. Using geodesic curves we were able to contour the surface into members. Grasshopper programming allowed us to set a confined length for the wood and bending strength, leading to a close connection between the digital and physical. Andrew Kudless was the faculty advisor who helped our team learn the advanced technologies and complete the project.
